Born on February 18, 1960 and raised in Houston, Texas. Dr. Rachel Adams Edwards is the mother of 3 children (one daughter and 2 sons).
“I identify as a Native American of the White Indian tribe which migrated from the mountains of Detroit, Michigan. Also, a grandmother of 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson. At present I am a widower.
In 1978 graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School. Next, ventured to Wiley College now known as Wiley University. Where my great grandmother did not graduate due to expecting my grandfather. My charge was to attend Wiley College and graduate for her. I saw first hand the
challenges and issues that may have occurred at the University. I too was expecting a baby however he never had a heartbeat. I too had an abortion. My last two summers I attended Fisk University and graduated from Wiley University in Biology and Chemistry. After all of that, it was hard for people to find jobs. So, I attended another summer program to find out if I really wanted to go to Medical School. After attending, I changed my mind due to relationship issues. While at Wiley University, I pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Phi Chapter) too.
Nexted, I worked at the Galleria. Then an opportunity opens up at Gulf Oil now Chevron downtown office. My next stop was Texas Southern University in the Biology Department. By this time I was married with a 10 month old daughter. I was confronted with another problem; getting off work at ten o’clock at night. As a parent, I had to make another decision; find a child friendly job.
The Houston Independent School System opened up as a wonderful place to work and raise children and prepare students as the next generation of adults or prepare students to become productive citizens. I began as a Middle School Substitute Teacher and the following year an Elementary School Teacher (classes held a HCC) at Kelso Elementary School. My positions were School Teacher, Librarian (University of Houston), Title One Coordinator/ Testing Coordinator and Assistant Principal (Saint Thomas University) . The District Office moved me to Dowling Middle School as the Dean of Instruction for two years. Then 6th Grade Principal.
When I left Kelso Elementary I was working on my Doctorate from NOVA Southeastern University. Reorganization began at Dowling Middle School and I took a leave of absence to complete my dissertation for two years. My 21 years in HISD was worth it. Received my Doctorate in June 2011.
Recession began and I could not return to the Houston Independent School System. I started a business from nothing to something: Owner of Orchid Circle Houston, LLC and Orchid Circle Moments etc… I closed for further research; changing people’s IP Addresses. So, I decided to help my family, especially the girls during their pregnancies and my boy’s girlfriend. In 2018, I went to ABM At Bush Intercontinental Airport. This is my fifth year in customer service at the Mobility Department (Unifi Service) where I meet people everyday. My five minute friends. Today, I still have conversations on Orchid
Circle Moments- “Everyone has a Right to Be their True Self.”
